AHP Professional development opportunities within the Therapies Department

We are a large teaching hospital in the privileged position of being able to offer our staff a vast range of learning experiences as part of their training. We are committed to supporting staff to fulfil their statutory and professional obligations to keep their knowledge and skills up to date, and to support their ongoing development and growth.

As soon as you join us, you'll attend a comprehensive induction programme and agree a personal, yearly development plan with your manager. This will cover your essential training requirements as well as both your personal and professional development needs. We have an impressive range of resources to help you follow that plan.

The trust provides a robust mandatory training program which is available as e-learning as well as in person. We also have the use of a Simulation lab to enhance learning practice. The trust also offers a range of in-house courses and programmes ranging from personal and skills development (including quality improvement training) through to people management and leadership development.

The Department has a designated AHP Research and Education team that work to support staff and help create a culture of learning and self-development within Teams. This allows the Department to work towards the Trust aim of having the best staff experience in the NHS by recruiting, retaining and developing a highly skilled AHP workforce.

Within the Department there are  12 different specialist therapy teams and many of our therapists are recognised internationally as specialists in their field. Therapists deliver training with Higher Education Institutions (HEI) partners on both an undergraduate and post graduate level.

As well as separate Dietetic, SALT, Orthotics/Prosthetic and a state of the art Motor Learning Lab Teams that work across all areas, AHP staff can gain experience in the following clinical areas:-

  • Adult Orthopaedics
  • Orthopaedic Oncology
  • Amputees
  • Paediatric Orthopaedics
  • London Spinal Cord Injury Centre (LSCIC)
  • Musculoskeletal Outpatients (at both Stanmore and Bolsover Street sites)
  • Specialist Upper limb management including Peripheral Nerve Injury (PNI)
  • Rehabilitation and Pain Management

Within the Therapies department you will have the opportunity to attend regular in-service training which is mapped against the 4 pillars of career development, and is offered at Masters level quality. We also support applications for study leave funding, identified in the yearly appraisal, linked with team objectives, for the continuing personal and professional development of all staff across the department.

For newly qualified staff there is a robust AHP preceptorship program that supports your early career development. You will also have access to the UCL library and a dedicated librarian.

All staff have access to the Trust Wellbeing Hub and its resources. There are also regular opportunities for staff at any level to get involved with projects that can help you to develop in areas that you are interested in: be it Leadership, Clinical Practice, Audit and Research, or Education.
