Actor Brian Cox and RNOH Consultant Rheumatologist, Prof Richard Keen, appear in a BBC Lifeline Appeal on behalf of the amazing work undertaken by the Brittle Bone Society
You can watch it here and learn more about what the Society does to support those who are affected by brittle bone disease, or Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).
OI is a genetic bone condition characterised by fragile bones that break easily. A person is born with this condition and is affected throughout his or her lifetime. OI is caused by a genetic mutation that affects the body's production of collagen, which can be found throughout the body, especially in a person's bones, joints, ligaments, teeth and skin. The Brittle Bone Society is the sole organisation set up to address the needs of people born with OI.
The charity supports people in the UK and Republic of Ireland and was the first registered charity in the world set up to support individuals with OI. It was founded in Brian Cox's home town of Dundee in 1968 by a local lady, Dr Margaret Grant MBE (1933-2020), whom herself had OI.
