The ward physiotherapist will visit you after your operation to teach you the following exercises. This will aid your recovery. Please do not attempt any of these exercises until you have been advised to do so.

Immediate post operative period

Screenshot 2025-02-11 at 10.06.31.pngLie with your upper body supported and legs out straight in front of you. Take a deep breath down to the bottom of your chest. Repeat 4 to 5 times.

Repeat hourly.


Screenshot 2025-02-11 at 09.11.41.pngLie on your back or in a sitting position. Bend and straighten your ankles briskly. If you feel your heels are getting sore, please stop the exercise and notify a member of staff. Repeat 20 times.

Repeat hourly.

Repeat hourly.

Repeat 10 times, hourly.

Repeat 10 times, 3 times daily.

Repeat 10 times, 3 times daily.


  • Avoid excessive twisting or lifting of heavy objects
  • Continue to increase your sitting tolerance and your walking distance on a daily basis
