The Infection service at RNOH is divided into:
- the general infection service
- the specialist orthopaedic infection service
The general infection service includes general clinical advice, laboratory liaison, infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship.
The specialist orthopaedic infection service is delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of consultant infection specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, clinical nurse specialists, and pharmacy staff and is responsible for pre-surgery planning, in-patient review, and post-operative follow up.
Patients requiring long courses of intravenous antibiotics or complex oral antibiotic regimens after discharge are monitored via the well established OPAT service operating a long distance model.
The service also sees a number of patients on long term antimicrobial suppression.
Referrals
The Orthopaedic Infection service currently does not accept direct referrals. All infection patients need a primary orthopaedic team and should be referred via the appropriate team page on this website.
